I just read over the majority of my blog posts from this year... ya know, to kind of reminisce about what's happened, seeing as it's New Year's Eve. That's why I love having this thing; I'm able to go back and see what happened and what I have considered and learned this past year. It's just fun.
Clearly, the majority of what I wrote about was the journey to and at Cambridge. I'm happy that I cataloged all of that. (I think if I do a scrapbook of my time there I'm going to include some of my blog entries about it. It will be a useful tool if I decide to do that.) My journey there included much amazement that it was actually happening and I think I still feel that way. I can't believe that I was actually there and did that. I wonder if I'll always feel that way.
I wrote a list of the things I wanted to do while I was there in my March 21 entry. Here it is in full, with the things I did do bolded.
Things I need to go/see in England:
- Burghley House (Went there! Amazing. One of my favorite things.)
- A beach (Southend-on-Sea. Exactly what I needed for my birthday weekend.)
- Canterbury (Didn't get here, but seriously considered it. There were too many travel considerations to make it there, unfortunately.)
- Seven Sisters Country Park (Same as Canterbury. It was too far from Cambridge and getting there was too complicated.)
- Every garden I can find (I would say that I did do this!)
- Lambeth Palace Library's 400th Anniversary Exhibition (I was in London, but kind of forgot about going there. But I did tons of other really cool things in London.)
Things I need to do in England:
- Punt on the River Cam (Did this on my first full day with my house parents! And I did this more than once while I was there.)
- Drink tea and eat a biscuit in a cafe (I didn't do these things in a cafe, but I definitely did them often.)
- Find an old cemetery and look at the gravestones (Did this within the first week I was there--Mill Road Cemetery, which is just a few blocks from where I stayed. It was awesome.)
- Have a drink in a pub (Did this on my first full day with Ian and Carrie, right after we punted. I also did this a few other times, as well, with Becky and her friends.)
- Attend Evensong at King's College Chapel (Did this! Loved it!)
- Take a walk every day (Not sure if I took a walk every day, but I definitely road my bike every day and took in the sights.)
I love that my blog entries while I was there include all sorts of lingo that they used. Haha! How could I not write that way, though? I just had to.
The first couple months of this year I also wrote a lot about leaving BroMenn and I constantly relive even now how awesome that job was. I'll probably always miss it and wonder if I should've stayed. I was so lucky to have that job and I wouldn't be the same person I am now had I not worked there.
I would say the following songs are the ones I will look back on 2010 and, when I hear them, think, "That is so the year I went to England:"
1. "Boy with a Coin" by Iron & Wine
2. "Empire State of Mind" by Jay-Z (featuring Alicia Keys)
3. "Satellite Heart" by Anya Marina
4. "Mama's Song" by Carrie Underwood
5. "Dog Days are Over" by Florence & The Machine
6. "Hot Tottie" by Usher (featuring Jay-Z)
7. "Bulletproof" by La Roux
8. "Motherless Child" by John Legend
In other news, I am seriously enjoying the computer speakers that Philip got me for Christmas. He was right that I was really missing out on good sound. The difference between what my laptop speaker sounded like and what I'm experiencing now is incredible. I've been rocking out all day today (to the aforementioned songs)!
