New Jerb

For awhile I've been thinking about getting a second job. We're trying to save more money for a down payment while also paying off credit card bills and anything extra will be helpful.

A couple of weeks ago I phone interviewed for a merchandiser position with American Greetings and then I had an in-person "interview," which was essentially her saying, "Welcome to the team," which was exactly what I wanted her to say, because--honestly--I want my second job to be as easy as possible. This little job means that I'm going into stores that carry the cards, straightening them, and putting out and ordering products. I've done a lot of training online, but this past Wednesday and today were my first days actually working in a store.

I must say that I am not a huge fan.

I have a few problems with the American Greetings company right off the cuff: Their cards are super expensive. I personally send a lot of cards (probably more than most people) and I have a hard time spending more than $2 for a card. The majority of AG's cards are like $4... some are even up to $6 or $7. I bet they get away with it because people (especially men) maybe just don't generally look at the back of the card to see how much it costs. The second thing I hate is that they throw away cards at the end of the season that don't sell. Instead of recycling them or donating them, they literally go in the trash. To me that means that their merchandise means nothing to them unless someone is willing to buy it. I guess that's probably true for any company, but it just makes me sad. Not to the mention the whole wasteful part that really irks me. (I worked for Hallmark in college and I can say that their cards are both higher quality and cheaper, in my opinion. I'm sure they also throw cards away, but I do see the same cards for a few years in a row, so maybe not? This is a conversation that only a card connoissuer such as myself cares about.)

Besides those two things, I'm just not sure if I want to handle a second job. I would feel bad quitting a week into it, so I'll give it a few weeks. Once I'm fully trained, I will be on my own 100% and I can work whenever I want, so those are good things. We'll see!
