Book Review - "The Sea of Tranquility" by Katja Millay

I find a lot of books randomly from the magazines I read. I have these subscriptions that came free because of miles I earned from booking on Orbitz. I particularly enjoy my People subscription; it is one of my life's guilty pleasures. (Saturday morning coffee with celeb gossip and a crossword puzzle... what's better in the world?! That's right. Not much.)

So anyway, most of these magazines have a page dedicated to novels that have been recently released. I always read the descriptions and almost all of them sound intriguing to me, so I make a note of them in my phone and then later add them to my "Favorites" within Heartland's library app. After I save them, I usually forget what they are about, so I'll just randomly pick one every once in a while and that's how I came across The Sea of Tranquility.

This book may have been described as a late teen novel when I first found it. I definitely picked up on that fact early on. It's set in a high school and I'm not against that, but I wasn't sure if I would enjoy a whole book about teen drama, especially one that starts with an angsty girl fully decked out in black who is starting the year at a new school. I feel like that is the starting story line of lots of movies and books set in high school. I stuck it out, though, and found that I did like this book.

The girl is not exactly who you think she is. She has an interesting back story that the author allows you to learn tidbits about throughout. The other characters sometimes teeter on the edge of cliche, but that's okay, because even in real life, characters in high school can actually be cliche.

It's also a bit of a love story and I enjoyed that aspect of it. There is quite a bit of sexual humor which is entertaining and even some sexual tension that makes you want the characters to just do it already.

The pace seemed to move on pretty well and I liked how the narration switched between characters.

If you're looking for a pretty easy read, perhaps while you're laying on your deck or on a beach or on your couch, you might like this one!
